The Independent, a weekly newspaper serving Pleasanton, Dublin, Livermore and Sunol, published an article on April 21, 2016, outlining the goals of the Citizens for Planned Growth’s Big Box on Johnson Drive Initiative to take Costco out of the planning for the new economic development zone.
The article highlighted ideas and presentations done during the Joint Meeting of the City Council and the Planning Commission on the Johnson Drive Economic Development Zone (JDEDZ) held on April 12.
According to the writer Carol Graham,
“Of the 30 residents who spoke during the workshop, three-quarters were opposed to the rezoning that would allow Costco or other big-box retailers to locate there.
“‘Costco would not be like an office, which is 9 to 5,’ said one speaker. ‘Traffic would start at 10 in the morning and go to 8 or 9 at night. It would get worse on weekends, making it a horrible experience going into that area. I am not supportive of a big-box store; I’m supportive of small businesses, offices and hotels. They will be more in the spirit of Pleasanton.’
“‘I like Costco; I shop there, but I’m satisfied to go to Livermore once a month,’ said another. ‘I’d rather go there than put up with everything we’d have to put up with.'”
